She Invited Me To Dance

Grandma Marie started her first dance school in Brooklyn where she taught classes at the age of 16 and possibly younger. My grandpa came for classes and the rest is history. She volunteered, was everyone’s friend, made the best butter cookies and even took a turn at painting birds.

She made all of Grandma and Grandpa‘s matching outfits for all their square dance days. They managed to visit every single state in the US in their mobile home, camping, visiting friends, square dancing and going to powwows.

Several years before she transitioned , I let her know I started doing African dance. She was so happy and encouraged me to dance in any form and I could see how it lit her up to know that dance had found me.

My grandmother dedicated her life to dancing and I dedicate my dancing to her. Today I danced all day. Salsa in the park and an evening with my Covid pod extended downtown with fun live music. I know she is dancing in heaven. I dance for her, I dance for freedom and I dance because I can.

What medicine has your Grandmother given you?
